چکیده

In this paper, we study the reliability (error probability) and rate tradeoffs among the receivers in single-antenna block Rayleigh-fading Gaussian broadcast channels. The rate and reliability tradeoffs are quantified through the notions of average multiplexing and diversity gains in the high signal to noise ratio (SNR) regime. Diversity and multiplexing gains that can be simultaneously achieved and the associated tradeoffs are well-understood in multi-antenna (MIMO) point-to-point systems. However, broadcast channels are different from pointto-point links in two important aspects (i) the availability of additional degrees of freedom in terms of flexible diversity tradeoffs among different users for the same set of multiplexing rates, and (ii) the opportunity to exploit the inherent multiuser diversity of the channel to improve the reliability. We study the diversity-multiplexing region defined as the set of 2K tuples of diversity and average multiplexing gains corresponding to all K receivers that are simultaneously achievable. We show that the diversity-multiplexing region can be significantly enlarged compared to the case where the transmitter has no channel state information (CSI) by exploiting only partial CSI in the form of the ordering of channel fading gains of users at the transmitter. This is done by proposing a time-division opportunistic scheduling scheme that can adjust to and support the average rate requirements of all receivers while exploiting the multiuser diversity of the channel. In particular, it is shown that when the average multiplexing gain of a receiver is small, its diversity gain is increased by a factor K (the number of receivers) compared to the case where no CSI is available.

This thesis studies some fundamental aspects of wireless systems with partial channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), with a special emphasis on the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. Proposed Pilot Pattern Methods for Improvement DVB-T System Performance

Recently, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been extensively used in communications systems to resist channel impairments in frequency selective channels. OFDM is a multicarrier transmission technology in wireless environment that use a large number of orthogonal subcarriers to transmit information. OFDM is one of the most important blocks in digital video broadcast-terrestr...

On the Achievable Diversity-Multiplexing Tradeoff in MIMO Fading Channels with Imperfect CSIT

In this paper, we analyze the fundamental tradeoff of diversity and multiplexing in multi-input multi-output (MIMO) channels with imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). We show that with imperfect CSIT, a higher diversity gain as well as a more efficient diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) can be achieved. In the case of multi-input single-output (MISO)/single-input mu...

Achievable Rate Regions for Orthogonally Multiplexed MIMO Broadcast Channels with Multi-Dimensional Modulation

In this work, we consider a multi-antenna channel with orthogonally multiplexed non-cooperative users, and present its achievable information rate regions with and without channel knowledge at the transmitter. With an informed transmitter, we maximize the rate for each user. With an uninformed transmitter, we consider the optimal power allocation that causes the fastest convergence to zero of t...

On the Asymptotic Performance of Multiple Antenna Channels with Fast Channel Feedback

In this paper, we analyze the asymptotic performance of multiple antenna channels where the transmitter has either perfect or finite bit channel state information. Using the diversitymultiplexing tradeoff to characterize the system performance, we demonstrate that channel feedback can fundamentally change the system behavior. Even one-bit of information can increase the diversity order of the s...
